A painter of a wide variety of subjects who painted in just as many styles, Alfred Bastien is remembered as one of Belgium’s preeminent painters from the early years of the twentieth century.
Born in Ixelles in 1873, Bastien was a pupil at the Ghent Academy followed by a continuation of his studies at the Brussels Academy. In 1895 he won a prestigious art prize which enabled him to travel to Paris to complete his studies at the Louvre. Returning to Brussels in 1897 he established a studio and commenced his career. At first he painted the landscapes of the Foret de Soignes but in 1905 he went to the Middle East for further inspiration where he remained for three years. 1913 found him once again traveling, this time to the Belgian Congo with his friend, the artist Paul Mathieu. He was to spend the years of the First World War in Ostend but by 1919 was again in Brussels exhibiting at the major institutions.
This example of his work dates to 1900, in the early part of his career. It perfectly illustrates his skills as a luminous Post-Impressionist painter.
Numerous works by Alfred Bastien can be found in Museums around the world.
