Clarence Henry Roe was born in the English town of Birmingham in 1850. Clarence was the son of the celebrated artist Robert Henry Roe, who was a painter of Highland scenes and Landseer style deer that were exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1852-and 1868 and was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.
Like his father, Clarence Henry became known as a painter of striking highland landscapes. Clarence started his career working in the countryside of Yorkshire, but as his reputation grew, he eventually moved his studio to the great city of London. There he exhibited at the prestigious Royal Hibernian Academy in 1887, which was located on Tottenham Road in London. Roe also exhibited at the British Institution, which was “established to encourage and reward the talents of the artists of the United Kingdom”. After achieving great success as an artist, Clarence Henry Roe died in the town of Menston, Leeds in 1909.
Over the years, his works have sold at numerous galleries including the Haworth Gallery in Accrington, Mercer Gallery in Harrogate, City Art Gallery in Southampton, and Ferens Art Gallery in Hull. Today, his paintings of highly desirable highland loch scenes can be found in collections throughout the world including the some of the museums listed below.
This particular painting depicts a couple, overlooking a dramatic sunset before a mountainous highland loch scene, hopeful for a new day.
