This large and dramatic work was painted by the Belgian artist Jules Massonet. He is remembered as an artist in oils who utilized a vibrant palette, bathing his paintings in a strong Mediterranean light. Little is known of his life although his works do occasionally appear on the art market. 

He is recorded as having been represented by the prestigious Galerie Georges Giroux in Brussels where an important exhibition of his paintings was held in 1948.
