Piet Volckaert was a Belgian artist born in 1902 in Saint-Gilles/Brussels and died in 1973 in Laken/Brussels. He was a painter and draftsman, trained at the Saint-Gilles academy, student of F. Gaillard and Léandre Grandmoulin. He later worked in Henri Roidot's workshop. Piet Volckaert was fond of painting old Brussels corners and streets such as "la place de la Chapelle" or "la rue des vers - impasse Ste Thérèse", canal views, landscapes, forest views from the area around the Red Monastery, the Rouge-Cloître abbey or the Soignes forest and portraits. Volkaert’s paintings are powerful, applied in bold, spontaneous lines, and a muted color palette. Piet was friends with D. Haine and was called the 'Brussels Utrillo' by Alain Viray.
